USGS Topographic Maps illustrate elevation, topography and surface features. The maps are also called Topo maps or Topoquads. The scale of these maps are 1:24,000 meaning one inch is equal to 2,000 feet making it possible to connect several maps, making one single map. This particular type of map is used as the base of several map products. The Topographic maps significantly appear for navigation on GPS systems, online sources, GIS, and on those paper maps used for traveling. The map above is a portion of a USGS Topographic map from 1971. The map is an image of a small town called Bellefonte. It contains a large number and variety of symbols. The map of Bellefonte also includes the names of streets, cemeteries, schools, sewage, hospitals, and other important land marks. There are also spatial patterns featured on the map. This specific map would most likely be used for navigating around the town or construction plans.
