A planimetric map is designed to show the horizontal positions of the area being mapped. The maps above are both examples of Planimetric maps. The map on the left is a two dimensional image and the map on the right is shaded three dimensional image. The map on the left is a display of Southern California and the map on the right is simply a ocean floor image.
